How does the glow-in-the-dark surface work?
The Safety-Grip top coating contains photoluminescent pigment that charges under ambient light — daylight, fluorescent, LED, or incandescent all work — and then emits a yellow-green glow when the light source is removed. No batteries, no wiring, and no radioactive material. Full charge takes about 15 minutes of ambient light exposure and provides several hours of visible glow after lights out.
How bright is the glow, and for how long?
Independent photoluminescent testing by Luminous Technologies Ltd measured 30 millicandela per m² at 2 minutes after lights out and 5 mcd/m² at 10 minutes — well above emergency-egress visibility thresholds. Peak brightness lasts the first 20–30 minutes with gradually decreasing brightness over the following hours; the plate re-charges automatically whenever ambient light returns.
What sizes are available?
Three flat sizes matching the standard SafetyMark H3409 footprint: 2.5" x 25" (63mm x 635mm), 4.5" x 25" (115mm x 635mm), and 4.5" x 40" (115mm x 1000mm). How do I install them?
Same as standard bolt-down plates: mark hole positions from the pre-drilled countersunk holes, pilot-drill the substrate, and screw the plate down with #10/#12 stainless wood screws or Tapcon-style concrete anchors. No adhesive is required. The photoluminescent coating starts charging as soon as it sees ambient light — full charge after about 15 minutes.
Do these meet emergency-egress marking codes?
Photoluminescent output meets the visibility criteria for IMO A.752 (marine emergency-egress marking) and ISO 17398 (safety-color photoluminescent marking). Wet coefficient of friction is 0.98 (ASTM D2047 methodology), supporting OSHA 1910.22 and ADA slip-resistance requirements. Can I use standard bolts and screws?
Yes. The pre-drilled countersunk holes accept flat-head #10 or #12 fasteners. Use 300-series stainless steel screws for outdoor and marine applications, standard zinc-plated wood screws for indoor wood substrates, and Tapcon-style concrete screws with a 3/16" masonry bit for concrete or masonry. Countersink slightly so fastener heads sit flush or below the top surface — this prevents forklift tires or foot traffic from catching the screw heads.
How is this different from photoluminescent tape?
Two big differences. First, adhesion — bolt-down plates are mechanically fastened, so they survive wet, oily, or porous substrates where tape adhesive fails. Second, durability — the 1.6mm aluminum base plate is forklift-rated and lasts 40+ months, while the safety-grip surface lasts 24+ months, versus photoluminescent tape which typically needs replacement every 6–12 months in industrial traffic. If your egress path sees forklifts, wet cleaning, or outdoor exposure, plates outlast tape by 3-4x.
